Oil cleansers are a big deal in the world of Kbeauty, particularly when it comes to the Korean beauty routine of “double cleansing”.
Brilliant for removing makeup, dissolving oils and impurities within the pores, Oil Cleansers are, in general, more effective and gentler than traditional cleansers.
You’ll find that many of the cleansers on the market are made with harsh chemicals and surfactants which can impact on your skin's natural barrier function.
If the huge range of oil cleansers out there are a little confusing - check this out:
We all know that not all oil cleansers are created equally right? But do you know the different types available? Pretty much, they are divided into 2 categories.
1. NATURAL OIL BASED CLEANSER
These oil cleansers feature natural oils sourced from plants as their main ingredients such as Camellia Seed Oil , Soybean Oil, Olive Oil etc.
2. SYNTHETIC OIL BASED CLEANSER
These are oil cleansers formulated with mineral oils or other synthetic oils such as silicon oils.
SO, HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT OIL CLEANSER?
Everyone’s skin faces different challenges. To help you find the right oil cleanser for your skin, here are my tips based on skin type:
1. DRY SKIN - CHOOSE A NATURAL OIL CLEANSER
Dry skin will love a natural oil based cleanser as these are nourishing and non-drying, protecting the skin during the cleansing process.
Pro tip: Natural oil cleansers don’t need to go through the double cleansing method so there’s a lot less drying.
We recommend what we consider one of the Best Korean Skin care products - the all natural and very luxe SanDaWha Natural Mild Cleansing Oil
This is a must have if you have dry skin. Made with more than 99% natural ingredients, it gently removes even waterproof mascara with ease and penetrates deep down to pores removing dirt, whiteheads and blackheads whilst bringing moisture back into your skin.
2. OILY/COMBINATION SKIN - CHOOSE A SYNTHETIC OIL CLEANSER
There is a common myth that if you have oily skin, you shouldn’t use an oil cleanser.
Pro Tip: Oil attracts oil! Oil cleansers attract the oils from your skin like sebums and oil-like ingredients in makeup. Using an oil cleanser quickly dissolves make-up and excess oil in your skin. Cool right?
We recommend The Face Shop Rice Water Bright Cleansing Oil as one of our favourite Korean Beauty Products. It has a smooth texture and glides over skin to wash away makeup and impurities, instantly refreshing your face for a clear complexion.
3. NORMAL SKIN - YOU CAN CHOOSE A SYNTHETIC OR NATURAL OIL CLEANSER
If you’re fortunate to have trouble - free skin - Lucky you! You can go either Natural or Synthetic without a problem.
Pro Tip: Make sure that throughout the seasons you check in with how your skin is doing and adjust your cleanser.
We recommend the astonishing Manyo Factory Pure Cleansing Oil as the perfect all rounder. This award winning oil cleanser is super nourishing and does a fab good job removing makeup.
4. ACNE PRONE SKIN - MAYBE GIVE AN OIL CLEANSER A MISS FOR A WHILE
There is only one skin type that we recommend stays away from cleansing oils. Acne prone skin is the one.
Pro Tip: Cleansing with a cleansing oil requires a bit of massaging which can exacerbate breakouts, so our advice is to stay away from oil cleansers until breakouts have cleared and your complexion is back to normal.
