Korean Skincare and Anti Ageing Part 1 - What Should You Be Using?

The ‘glow of youth’ is no myth! We typically start life with flawless and radiant skin, but as we grow older our skin starts to naturally go through a number of changes. Fortunately, the right skincare routine can help to protect, maintain and replenish our skin to keep it looking and feeling beautiful.

What are the signs of ageing skin?

There are a number of signs that can point to our skin ageing:

Sagging Skin

Both collagen and elastin help to keep skin plump and firm in our youth. As we get older our bodies produce less natural collagen and elastin, which can lead to sagging or drooping skin.

Dark Age Spots

Our melanocytes (or pigment cells) start to multiply more quickly as time goes on. That can mean age spots can appear, particularly on sun-exposed areas such as the décolletage.

Dry Skin

The natural oil and moisture in our skin tends to drop off as we age, so we need to maintain skin with a healthy diet, plenty of water and hydrating products. Sun exposure can also be very drying to skin.

Thinning Skin

The lower layer of our epidermis slows its rate of cell production as we age, which leads to our skin becoming thinner – and as a result more prone to becoming crepey or wrinkled.

Lines and Wrinkles?

A lower moisture content and lower rates of elastin and collagen can mean that fine lines and wrinkles begin to appear in areas that move regularly, for example around the eyes and mouth.

Dull Skin

Ageing skin can suffer from a build-up of dead skin cells, leading the skin tone skin to appear dull. Regular gentle exfoliation and healthy skin hydration can help to keep skin looking fresh.

Broken Blood Vessels and Bruising

Blood vessels can sometimes break or become enlarged as we get older, contributing to bruising or redness in our skin. This can include spider veins and varicose veins.

What types of anti ageing products should I use?

The beauty products we choose can significantly improve the beauty of ageing skin. South Korea is known the world over for its comprehensive skincare routines for illuminous skin, however there are a few key elements that are important for ageing skin. The very best Korean anti wrinkle skincare products are now available here in Australia, including:

Oil-based cleanser

Is an oil based or water based cleanser better for an anti ageing skincare routine? Throughout the day and night our skin can accumulate impurities, both from the environment and from makeup and/or sunscreen. These residues can irritate the skin and even cause bacterial infections that can prematurely age the skin.

We love the Natural Mild Cleansing Oil for its gentle cleansing action of both oil and water based residue. Rather than stripping away the skin’s natural oils, oil cleanser actively hydrates as it cleans. Best of all, there’s no need to follow this particular product with a foam cleanser, as the formulation washes away easily to leave skin clean and refreshed. (If you have oily or combination skin, however, a gentle foam cleanser will be more suitable).

Sheet masks

There are countless face masks to target specific skin conditions, but our anti aging skin care clients have seen amazing results with the the All-In-One Wrinkle Care Mask to target fine lines and wrinkles. This mask contains adenosine, antarcticine and collagen to lift the skin; hyaluronic acid to improve moisture absorption; niacinamide for its skin brightening properties; and ceramide which works to limit moisture loss. If your skin is dry, follow your mask up with a face oil or moisturiser.

Moisturiser

As our skin ages it becomes drier, so it’s vital that we keep it looking plump and supple with a quality moisturiser. Our Stemcell Radiance Cream is an ultra-hydrating moisturiser which contains wild ginseng stem cells – an ingredient that is very high in antioxidants to actively improve skin tone. It also includes peptide-rich EGF, which stimulates skin growth at the cellular level for a healthy glow.

Sunscreen

One of the quickest ways to age your skin is to regularly expose it to strong sunlight, because UV damage can lead to wrinkles, fine lines, dark spots and pigment irregularities. Here in Australia the solar UV intensity is exceptionally high and we should be particularly aware of its risks. Our Daily Mild Sun Perfect Shield is an ideal all-round and non-nano option for all skin types, providing broad SPF33 protection against UVA and UVB rays as you go about your day.

The best Korean skincare for anti ageing will depend on your unique skin type, so be sure to book a free skin consultation to find out which products will keep your skin at its most beautiful.
