HOW TO TREAT PIGMENTATION WITH KOREAN SKINCARE PRODUCTS

Spots, freckles and patches – many of us have some kind of pigmentations on our skin. While it’s our differences that make us beautiful, in some cases we may want to target these pigmentations with gentle yet effective skincare. Here we outline what can cause pigmentation and how to treat it with Korean skin products now available in Australia.

WHAT CAN CAUSE SKIN PIGMENTATION?

Skin pigmentation, or hyperpigmentation, can occur due to a number of reasons. These can include:

1. Sun damage

UV damage from the sun, which can lead to dark age spots over time.

2. genetics

Genetics, which can make us more prone to freckles or age spots.

Before treating your skin pigmentation, we would always recommend speaking with your doctor in case the pigmentation has an underlying cause that should be attended to. If spots happen to be changing in size, shape or are itchy or uncomfortable, it’s important to get these checked. The good news is that pigmentation often tends to be an aesthetic concern rather than a medical one.

how can i target skin pigmentation with korean skincare in australia?

As you may know, there are quality Korean skin care options to suit almost every skin type under the sun, and there are a number that are carefully formulated to target skin tone and pigmentation.

We would suggest wearing a daily broad spectrum sunscreen to minimise further sun damage (broad spectrum protecting against both UVA and UVB radiation), such as our Natural Herbs Sun Block Cream for all skin types.

So what are the best ingredients for skin pigmentation?

While this is by no means an exhaustive list, there are three main ways that skincare can help to improve the appearance of pigmentation and blemishes:

1. VITAMIN C

An ingredient such as Vitamin C can help to reduce melanin formation by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase within the epidermis. Vitamin C also brightens pigmentation without changing normal skin tone, and additionally helps to protect the skin against further UV damage – but remember that this will not replace the need for quality sunscreen!

2. AHA OR RETINOL

Ingredients such as AHA or retinol can help to break down pigmented cells to gently fade pigmentation over time. Products containing these ingredients can be particularly effective if you’ve treated the underlying cause of pigmentation (such as changing a medication) and are waiting for your skin tone to even out. Keep in mind that AHA and retinol products should not be used together (instead, choose one or the other), and remember that these highly-effective ingredients should be used in the evening – as they can actually make skin more sun sensitive and prone to pigmentation if used in the morning.

3. NIACINAMIDE

Finally, an ingredient such as niacinamide can brighten skin tone by preventing melanin transfer from our melanocytes in the basal layer of the epidermis, to the recipient keratinocytes. Niacinamide can also improve skin barrier function and therefore improve blotchiness and redness in the skin.
